Google Ends Funding of Climate Denial
Google had been making substantial contributions to climate change denying think tanks and lobbying groups for years. We thought this was rather at odds with their supposed commitment to climate action, not to mention their motto of "Don't Be Evil".
So we decided to pressure Google to do the right thing by announcing they HAD done the right thing. We put up a webpage with a blog post from Google CEO Sundar Pichai at www.agreenergoogle.com announcing the end of their support for climate change denying organizations, and we distributed a social media posting guide to the email list of Extinction Rebellion NYC to post on April 1st, to hijack the publicity caused by Google's annual April Fool's Prank.
The website quickly went viral and prompted stories from numerous publications including Scientific American, Grist, Protocol, and MarketWatch (who fell for it and had to print a retraction). A Greener Google added pressure to a campaign by Google workers that resulted in Google significantly upping its climate commitments. Google has still not revived its April Fool's prank.
